Owen Wright and the First day of spring And tomorrow we have a new issue for you

what youth owen wright surfing snapper rocks

Over the weekend, lots of you probably watched Owen Wright win the Quiksilver Pro. A feel good hit for the spring to be sure. There were times over the past year in which I had conversations with people about whether Owen would ever properly surf again, so I must say it was a pleasure to sink a glass of wine as he took down Matt Wilkinson in the final, came in and was greeted by his girl and new baby. I mean, I never thought I would watch him surf Snapper again, let alone win the Quiksilver Pro — which marked his first event back in over a year after suffering a head injury at Pipeline.  So today, we toast to you, Owen. And those daffodils blooming in my window sill.

Watch the final here if you missed it:

This weekend we also got to leak a few issue 17’s around town before they hit the shop. It will go on sale tomorrow (tonight at 9pm PST/12am EST). Issue 17 is a triumphant return for us. A return to doing shit for the sake of doing it. In this issue, we nearly capsized (but didn’t) during a trip to Indo. We went to Norway, we interviewed Andrew Allen, Ty Segall, got inside the studio with Allah-Las, Chas Smith tells us why surf journalism is absurd, there are mice cubes and Manhattans and more than a few things we’ll probably get in trouble for. But, that’s always worth it!

So here’s the deal: Tonight at 9pm PST/12am EST, Issue 17 goes on sale and will ship to you immediately.

We’ve been getting closer and closer to selling each issue out so make sure you grab one while they’re around. Reprinting sounds like a hassle and we probably won’t get around to it. So these are one and done.

So remember: Tonight at 9pm PST/12am EST, Issue 17 is on sale. Spring has sprung!

Volcom Surfing what youth dear youth

Dear Youth Not a sponsored message

Since tending to the neoprene department at the local surf shop I worked at as a kid, a Volcom party has been the pinnacle of after hours culture and folklore around here. Rumors of Pennywise playing…or Bad Religion…or the fact that that hot girl in the other department was attending and this was your shot….

Dear Youth If a woman does not love the sea, then she is no woman for me

I have nothing to report. I sit behind a computer all day and get drinks with girls at night. Occasionally, I draw                         missing the water.

Dear Youth Nate Lawrence on photography

Editor’s Note: There just aren’t enough things in life like Nate Lawrence. Which is unfortunate, because he fucking rules..at everything. Especially photography. It’s a big reason he was our first choice when deciding who we were bringing into this mess of indie creation. He knew what was in store. And we needed his enthusiasm. There…

Dear Youth A night in London with Kai Neville

Camden Town. Following our recent film trip to the Canary Islands, I stopped off in London for a night. For whatever reason I’ve always been drawn to London. I am a descendent from the U.K. I like the culture. I like drinking pints in foggy London Town. I like cities. I need to be in…

Dear Youth The adolescents are coming

Tomorrow we’ll be unveiling a new series we’ve been working on called The Adolescents. The idea behind the series is to illuminate and introduce you to some of the younger surfers we’ve been watching and getting psyched on. Kai Neville has been grooming and documenting the elite in surfing through his filmmaking for a while…

Dear Youth: The Wishkah Bridge A pilgrimage to find Nirvana by C.S. Louis

There are probably several fanatical accounts citing the significance of the Wishkah bridge on the Internet. And hopefully this will inspire you to check them out over a can of beer alongside some righteous tunes. I am not capable of delivering as thorough a report because I have not yet done such research, and arrived…

“Well, I’m out of here on Saturday,” Nate Lawrence just told me. Another round of trips are leaving and waves of new projects are hitting the road. 2013 was incredible. And if you want you can see for yourself here, but we can’t stay idle for long. Kai and Nate have plane tickets, rental cars…

I’d say that’s all we can do. Attempt to prepare you. Although there’s not really any way to do that. But this is your warning shot for our new monthly series of celluloid called Panther Vision presented by Volcom. The series was created exclusively for What Youth by Jamie Heinrich — who’s a creative freaking…

Dear Youth From the terminal

These artifacts detail a long-winded sitting. With an interesting man. Who had a lot to say. The setting was perfect. The lighting signifies that it was conducted in a place where the mind runs more freely, spurred on by caffeine and nicotine. The latter not something we condone, but something we realize is a necessary…

Dear Youth: Taj Burrow, Creed McTaggart and Jay Davies farewell session in the West

We made our beds at Taj’s house this morning. Packed up and toasted the forever legendary one himself for his hospitality, gracious pours of red and for sharing his home break this week. Taj, Creed, and Jay spent most of the morning trading pits in the cerulean blue that you’ll only find in the western…
