One Roll by Michael Cukr When the What Youth parking lot caught fire, backstage at HQ and us shipping the Dylan Issue

/ PRV

I woke up this morning and everything said 2016 sucked. And fuck, at times it most certainly did. We lost a lot of great this year. But if there’s nothing else you get out of checking out our site, mags or vids, is that, well, thats’ part of this shark fight called life. It’s how you react, how you rebound, how you find the silver lining in the rubble. Michael Cukr just finished scanning tons of film from the year, and this roll features the week following the loss of Dylan Rieder, our office nearly being set fire and how we all hungout and sifted through the ashes together. 2016 sucked, but it also didn’t. We’re all still in this together. And we’ll see you next year. Promise.—Travis

One Roll 019: Tom Carey One unedited roll of film shot behind the scenes on the North Shore

The North Shore is a bizarre and beautiful place. On the surface it can look like a surf mecca with tourists, bystanders and a few sprinkles of international professional surfers and locals — not unlike any surf town. But upon closer inspection, it is one the most authentic surf experiences on the planet. And the…

One Roll 018: Sweden and Norway A roll of film shot by Michael Cukr

Next month we’ll be premiering a new film we made from this trip through Scandinavia. We brought all sorts of boards: some surf, some snow, some skate and even more jackets. Chippa Wilson, Jake Blauvelt, Keegan Valaika and Louif Paradis bundled up with us and wandered through the all-day light. And our very own Michael Cukr fired…

One Roll 016: From the Mentawais A roll of film shot on the boat by Scott Chenoweth

The voyage out to the Mentawais from Padang was rough. We set sail with a batch of fresh faces including Soli Bailey, Ian Crane, Colin Moran, Kai Hing, Luke Hynd and Zak Condon. We left for the crossing straight into a storm with gusts so strong they snapped one of the ropes holding up the main…

One Roll 015: Tahiti in Black and White Photographed by Dylan Goodale and starring Danny Fuller and Billy Kemper

Billy is texting with Raimana and starts to smirk.  “Hey Brother! We’ll see you at the airport Friday morning! But who is this Dylan Goodale? Danny says he comes with you guys? Who is this?” Billy pauses, reads the text over, ponders an appropriate response as he looks at me wondering the same thing I…

One Roll 013: Hamish Humphreys From boat trip action to the city of Melbourne

Remember Hamish Humphreys? You may know the name from his time assisting and working with our very own Nate Lawrence. He was shooter number two on every Cluster trip. He’s lived in Bali and shot all the action a man can shoot. And now he made a move. And moved to Melbourne, Australia. Just because….

One Roll 012: Olya Matvieieva Holding still on the East Coast

Olya Matvieieva has been submitting photos to us since we started What Youth and they’ve always especially caught our eye. They are calm, still, rich in color and always shot on film — all rare and charming qualities in a world gone completely mad and hurried and digital. Her photos silently shout. And appear to exist in…

One Roll 011: What Youth Japan Behind the scenes of our trip to Japan by Jordan Brown

We recently wrapped up a trip to Japan with Kevin Terpening, Peter Ramondetta, Ishod Wair and Raven Tershy. The trip was photographed by Arto Saari and legendary Japanese skater and photog Rip Zinger. You’ll see those photos in What Youth Issue 13 coming in December. But since the trip was supported by Monster and team…

One Roll 009: Nate Tyler in California Roll(s) shot by Michael Cukr

We tricked Nate Tyler into letting us come stay with him at his beautiful home in Central California a few weeks ago. We told him we’d make a video about him (which we did), but really, we just wanted to hang with him and his beautiful family in his lovely hometown. It really is where…
