The reinvention of Cosmic Creek Brendon, Noa, Froth, Tropical Popsicle and much more

Cosmic Creek has been around a long time (this is the 14th annual event), the retro surf event has always been a good time, riding weird boards and getting experimental, but this weekend it’s getting a whole new vibe thanks to Vissla. Instead of Donavan and drum circles and chunky sandals, this year, you’ll find Noa Deane, Brendon Gibbens, HaydenShapes, Froth, Tropical Popsicle and more bringing a fresh interpretation of the throwback surf contest. It’s taking the form of a festival. And we couldn’t be more thrilled to attend. And you should too.

The morning will feature a surf contest with pros, shapers and locals. The concept is simple, you draw a card before your heat and you have to ride the board you draw. Vissla will supply original ’60s and ’70s single and twin fin options for competitors to choose from. The Creators and Innovators division consists of local shapers from San Clemente to Laguna Beach including Gary Larson of Hobie Surfboards, Dave/Dan Bohne of Infinity Surfboards, Donald Brink, and Ryan Engle. While the local entrants and Pros will ride original crafts, the Creators & Innovators will ride a craft they shaped themselves inspired by the time period. So thats’ the surfing part. And with a list of pros like Noa Deane, Brendon Gibbens, Derrick Disney, Nate Yeomans, Colin Moran and a few surprise guests, should be a pretty fun morning.

There will also be a Creators & Innovators tent where you can demo boards from Danny Hess, Haydenshapes, Donald Brink and Jeff McCallum. In addition, Grain Surfboards will be onsite conducting hand plane workshops where you can create your own custom handplane right on the beach. Saturday night, D’Blanc and What Youth (that’s us!) will host a free concert with live music by Lolipop Records favorites Froth and Tropical Popsicle. Music on the beach will be provided both days by Reverberation Radio DJs who will be playing dusted off vinyl and our all-time favorites. Local vendors will provide provisions at the event, from breakfast and lunch by Shwack to morning caffeine by Seaworth Coffee.

Basically, your Saturday is now filled, so come down, it’s summer again and this is the official kickoff.

If you really want to dig in to see all that’s happening and the boards that the boys will be shredding, check out the site here:
