“What is a singing saw? It is an instrument that creates ethereal sounds, but it is also a tool: Basic and practical while also being fearsome, even destructive.” Such is the description of Kevin Morby’s phenomenal new album Singing Saw, which dropped today on independent label Dead Oceans. Inspired by his recent move to Mount Washington, arguably the best neighborhood in all of LA, Morby embraced the winding hills and sweeping skyline and the dark, underbelly of the city to produce the framework for a collection of lush, truly powerful, sometimes aching songs, a lament of duality, just like the singing saw itself: beautiful and painful all at once.
Okay, that’s a little deep for an album description. But if you wanna hear music that might make your heart explode while your ears trip out on a sonic adventure of textured, robust orchestration, listen to this record. It’ll do you good. –Maya Eslami
